Introduction
Keeping a diverse range of printers, copiers and
multifunction products (MFPs) running at optimal
performance can be a challenge for IT managers and
network administrators. Organisations often have devices
from a number of manufacturers. Each manufacturer
offers proprietary device management tools but these
cannot be used to manage other manufacturers’ devices.
Instead of using several tools, IT managers and
administrators prefer to use one system for managing all
their devices.
Hewlett-Packard (HP) addresses this need by offering
non-proprietary device management software called
HP Web Jetadmin. Unlike proprietary device management
tools, HP Web Jetadmin can be used to monitor many
different models from various manufacturers. HP Web
Jetadmin is widely accepted and used by IT managers. By
ensuring that our devices adequately support HP Web
Jetadmin, Ricoh can maximise IT sales.
What is HP Web Jetadmin?
HP Web Jetadmin is non-proprietary software for
installing, configuring and managing networked devices
including printers, scanners and MFPs. It allows network
administrators to use a single software interface to
manage devices from all major manufacturers.
HP Web Jetadmin is free and can be downloaded from HP
websites. HP Web Jetadmin is accessed via a standard
web browser and enables administrators to remotely
manage networked devices.
HP Web Jetadmin can send email messages, or alerts,
whenever a device requires intervention. For example, an
administrator can receive an email when a device runs out
of paper or has low toner levels. Receiving early
notification of printer events allows administrators to
correct the problems before they impact end user
productivity, saving time for both the administrator and
the end user. Users can also perform certain tasks using
HP Web Jetadmin. For example, they can monitor device
status and search for a device by location or capabilities.
How HP Web Jetadmin works
Any device that supports standard printer MIB (RFC 1759)
and MIB II (RFC 1213) can be monitored using HP Web
Jetadmin, provided that the print server can send printer
MIB requests to the printer and relay answers back to HP
Web Jetadmin.
However, each manufacturer has its own proprietary MIBs
that define a device’s advanced capabilities. To enable HP
Web Jetadmin to communicate effectively with another
manufacturer’s proprietary MIB, a device plug-in is
required. Some manufacturers have developed device
plug-ins via HP’s third party device certification program.
HP Web Jetadmin can monitor devices from
all major manufacturers from a single interface
